Letter: Many of Boyer's 'facts' have been debunked

A person holds a letter with the text "letter to the editor" overlaid on the image.

Marlene Boyer, in her letter, " Let's look at the facts ," published Jan. 4, invites a correction "[i]f the facts that came across the internet are inaccurate,..."

Her letter asserts that Trump won 3,084 of our country's 3,141 counties. This false claim was originally floated shortly after the 2016 election. It may have gotten these numbers from Patrick Leahy's article published in Breitbart News on Nov. 14. Leahy wrote that "Donald Trump won an overwhelming 7.5 million popular vote victory in 3,084 of the country's 3,141 counties or county equivalents in America's heartland." He did not say that Trump won all of those 3,084 counties (i.e., that Clinton won only 57 counties in the whole country). In fact, Clinton won 58 counties in Texas and Georgia alone. This makes Boyer's assertion inaccurate without even including any counties that Clinton won in any of the other states, including in the 20 states that she carried in the election.

The Associated Press debunked Ms. Boyer's claim in an article way back on Dec. 6, 2016, and here we are in 2020 still being fed inaccurate information. I believe Boyer could have detected this inaccuracy in less than 30 seconds had she bothered to factcheck her assertion.
