Letter: Skip the provocation and you may just get a warning

A person holds a letter with the text "letter to the editor" overlaid on the image.

Let up on the gas as soon as you see the flashing red lights, put on your right turn signal, get in the right lane ASAP if not there already and coast into the next available safe place for you and the officer to stop. Leave your seat belt on, open your driver’s side window and freeze your hands on the 10 and 2 o’clock positions on the steering wheel.

Greet the officer with a friendly smile, answer all the officer’s questions and do exactly what the officer says. Skip the provocations and performance art and you may even end up with a warning instead of an expensive ticket, points off your license and a starring role in a publicly-viewed police video.
