Letter: Support for Minnesota day cares is an absolute joke

I have read where Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has a friend who owns a candy store in Minnesota and was considered an essential business. I am wondering if he has friends in day care also? My daughter has a day care in Minnesota and day cares were asked when the COVID 19 started if they had children whose parents were essential workers if they would stay open during this pandemic. There is a lot of added expense in staying open with all the extra cleaning supplies and time invested in cleaning, etc.

Walz announced there would be a fund set up to help day cares with this added expense. My daughter's day care can have 10 kids. Of the 10 children in her day care, nine had parents who were essential workers so she has stayed open during this time. She applied in the first round of the funding, but was turned down because there were not enough positive cases in the county they live in to qualify. Right after, this the county became the second largest hotspot for positive cases.

She applied for the second round, but was turned down because the town they live in no longer has a hospital. Since then she has found that 56% of day cares that receive money the first time also received money the second time and the rest are just out of luck. Something really stinks in the state of Minnesota and it isn’t diapers in a day care.
