There are some nasty rumors going around that President Trump and Postmaster General DeJoy are deliberately sabotaging the US Postal Service so they can cheat the election due to the widespread adoption of mail-in voting. There are multiple concerns: blue mailboxes are being removed, mail sorting machines are being removed, and staffing changes. These concerns are unwarranted.
Whenever blue mailbox volume drops below a certain threshold, that box is removed because it is not worth the postal carrier’s time or tax dollars to go pick up mail from that location. This is an automatic cost control measure that has been in place for years, long before DeJoy was appointed. It is normal.
Whenever mail volume overall falls too low, some mail sorting machines are decommissioned because it is not worth the tax dollars to maintain them. Other sorting machines are then moved to new locations to compensate. This is normal cost control that has been going on for years and nobody ever batted an eye. (Source: Washington Post, 8/20/20)
The USPS recently started cracking down on overtime and banning mail carriers from doubling back on their routes for the same reason. Every private business in the economy restricts unnecessary overtime because it is wasteful. This is normal cost control.
Have you noticed a pattern yet? We can have publicly available government services without them being black holes for tax dollars. With the rise of the internet and email, envelope mail has been steadily declining for 20 years and the USPS is adjusting accordingly.
