Sunday, Sept. 30, marked the second year of the Fargo-Moorhead "Out of the Darkness" Community Walk sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - North Dakota Chapter.

It seemed that cooperation was the motto: The weather cooperated; the media (newspaper, television, radio) encouraged participation; sponsors came forth with financial support, volunteers ensured the day would run smoothly, local businesses provided sandwiches, coffee, snacks and bottled water - and most important, 400 walkers, young and old, bonded together to share their grieving and provide support.

More than $20,000 was raised to finance the vital programs designed to prevent suicide. Most encouraging was the number of young people, high school and college age, who joined the walk, seeming to recognize the vulnerability of that age group.

Plans for the Sept. 28, 2008, Fargo-Moorhead "Out of the Darkness" Community Walk are already being made as we gradually grow in our understanding of this disease.
