In response to The Forum's article, "Students challenge campaign: MSUM launches effort to curb alcohol abuse" of Oct. 18:

I am a concerned student at Minnesota State University Moorhead who is actively involved in many programs and organizations on campus dealing with the health and wellness of students. I serve as the student assistant to the Hendrix Health Center Peer Education Program.

As peer educators we develop and implement various activities and programs designed to encourage healthy lifestyles including providing information to students on alcohol use and misuse. We are assisting the Alcohol Task Force with implementing the social norm campaign on campus as well.

When I came to college there was the perception that everyone drinks and drinks a lot. Through my experiences as a student and a peer educator, I now know that to be a misperception.

On Monday, Oct. 17, MSUM kicked off the social norm campaign designed to help change the misperceptions regarding alcohol use and misuse. Various universities around the country have seen positive results on their campuses when social norm campaigns have been implemented. I strongly believe we can have those same results here at MSUM.
