Meghan Crooks, Fargo, Letter: Fargo urban sprawl ruins the landscape

I couldn't agree more with Karen Brink (letter, May 4). My parents moved well south of Fargo 25 years ago, convinced that they would be able to watch the sun set on the horizon from our yard well into retirement. Unfortunately, it looks as though this won't happen.

Fargapolis sold out to the developers years ago. Just yesterday I cringed to see that two more farms had been torn down to clear way for another cookie-cutter development filled with homes identical to every house in south Fargo - down to the floor plan.

Fargo is determined to "develop" and "grow" the city. Yet what about the blocks of run-down houses and vacant lots near the center of town? Perhaps if this land was developed, enough population could be brought back into the heart of the city (not the outskirts) that the north side schools could fill up evenly with the south side schools. The constant debate over school boundaries could finally be dropped.

Instead, as I watch our neighbors plow the land they've harvested for generations and observe another beautiful sunset, my heart breaks. These images are fleeting. Soon that horizon will be obscured by more sprawling "progress." The fields and farms will be destroyed for more parking lots and Wal-Marts. I just hope I'm not around to see it.
