I was distressed by the opinions expressed by Natalie Lindquist in a letter to The Forum (Sept. 9)

She said Boy Scouts should be punished for hypocrisy, they teach hatred, are guilty by blatant discrimination, their policies are inexcusable, their supporters ignorant, they must be silenced and not allowed to lead.

Now don't people and organizations in America have the right to moral opinions without being maligned and vilified and warned they must be punished and silenced? This smacks of totalitarianism and arrogance.

Thank God there are millions of Americans with more open-minded and tolerant attitudes toward the opinions of other. Let us learn to honor the statement attributed to Voltaire: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
