I would like to respond to the comments made by John Wentzell concerning the naming of the new Moorhead school after Robert Asp.
He stated that he was disappointed that Asp had been chosen because, in his opinion, Asp was "not a good teacher." On the contrary, Asp was not only an excellent teacher but also a wonderful school counselor.
As a grade-schooler I distinctly remember field trips to Hawley, Minn., to view his dream ship, the Hjemkomst, as it was being constructed inside an old potato warehouse. I had the honor of knowing Asp personally during my junior high years at what was then known as North Junior High School. He knew his students by name, and always greeted us cheerfully when we passed him in the hallway. He took the time to speak to us about our interests and congratulate us on our sporting and academic accomplishments. He fed our dreams.
None of us knew just how ill he was because he gave us his all and it was a sad day indeed when he had to leave us. He has remained in my memory all these years as an inspiration, an example that with enough hard work and belief in yourself, your dreams can come true.
My children are nearly grown now, and three years ago I returned to college at the ripe old age of 35, believing that I could fulfill my dream. If he were alive today, I know Asp would be cheering me on. Not a good teacher? Shame on you. I believe we need more teachers just like him.
