Roy Klinger, Moorhead, letter: Rip-off at gas pump by the gas pump

So you think you paid $3.459 per gallon for your tank of gas? Next time, watch the calculator on the pump and listen for the gas to be delivered to your tank.

So you think you paid $3.459 per gallon for your tank of gas? Next time, watch the calculator on the pump and listen for the gas to be delivered to your tank.

Before the gas is delivered from the underground tank to your tank, 87 cents has rung up on the calculator. You paid for about one-quarter gallon of gas that you did not get. That means the 14.168 gallons of gas that I put in my car cost an additional 6 cents per gallon for a total of $3.519 per gallon rather than the advertised pump price of $3.459.

A gas station that has 500 cars purchase gas in one day brings in an additional $435. Whose pocket does that go into? The oil company or the gas station's?

It seems a simple check valve to keep the gas in the hose would be the solution or setting the calculator to start five seconds after the pump starts.

In this day of technology, that should be an easy fix.
