Shaw: I'm humbled once again

In a previous column where I suggested new names to replace Woodrow Wilson, I’m ashamed to say I overlooked Herman Stern of North Dakota. Stern incredibly saved the lives of 125 German and Austrian Jews living under Nazi control. Despite many roadblocks from the Nazis and the U.S. State Department, Stern brought them here after he pledged his personal assets, and found them jobs. At some point, there should be a Herman Stern School somewhere in North Dakota.

It’s been more than one month since the presidential election, and President Trump still refuses to admit defeat. Trump lost the Electoral College by 306 to 232 and the popular vote by 6.8 million votes. Results have been certified. Somehow, Trump continues to disgracefully claim he won, and makes baseless allegations of voter fraud.

I continue to receive 10 emails a day from Trump. One of them said, “We cannot let the Democrats STEAL this election from your all-time favorite president.” I’m not worried about that. Abraham Lincoln was already elected.

What does worry me is Trump’s efforts to throw out legitimate ballots and overturn the will of the people. It was appalling that he contacted election officials and legislators in Michigan, to try to get them to proclaim him the winner in that state. Equally disturbing was him firing cybersecurity director Chris Krebs for declaring that the election was secure.

It’s also outrageous that North Dakota Sens. John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer have still not declared Joe Biden the winner. Yes, they both belatedly called for the transition process to begin, but that’s not good enough. Instead, Cramer sadly said, “We haven’t seen all the (voter fraud) evidence…We have to let this legal system play out.” We haven’t seen the evidence because there isn’t any. Also, how many more bogus court cases does Trump have to lose before Cramer admits it’s over?

Good t o see that Kelby Krabbenhoft is out as Sanford Health president and CEO. Krabbenhoft lost all credibility when he foolishly boasted that he wouldn’t wear a mask because he’s had COVID-19 and downplayed this crisis. With the coronavirus raging out of control in North and South Dakota, Krabbenhoft’s statements were an insult to the brave and knowledgeable Sanford medical staff members battling this deadly virus, and sent a dangerous message to the public.

Of the five finalists for the new name of Woodrow Wilson High School, I hope the Fargo School Board will select Agnes Geelan High School. Geelan, from Enderlin, was the first woman mayor of an incorporated city in North Dakota, and first woman state senator in the state. She was also a teacher and author.
