A couple of days ago, as we crossed 10th Street North at 12th Avenue (within the crosswalk), my dog and I were almost hit by a vehicle turning left. The truck came within an inch of us, and in response to my fear and shock, the driver smiled and zoomed off.
Today, I read about Vice President Dick Cheney's foul language in dealing with his professional colleague in the Senate. Somehow these two events seem to go together.
One of the most important elected men in our government is so coarse and self-important that he finds no reason to apologize for using totally inappropriate language in his place of work. It shouldn't be shocking then that regular folk, like the pickup driver who almost hit me, think of themselves as too important to wait an extra second or two for a pedestrian and don't feel compelled to show concern when they scare or almost hurt someone.
I think we need better examples in our country concerning the considerate and humane way to treat each other. Shame on Cheney!
