Otterdahl nears collegiate record for Bison track and field team

LINCOLN, Neb. — Only two collegiate athletes have ever thrown a shot put farther than North Dakota State's Payton Otterdahl.

Otterdahl threw the shot put 71 feet Saturday at the Mark Colligan Memorial at Bob Devaney Sports Center. He moved up to No. 3 on the all-time NCAA indoor list and is ranked No. 1 in the world this year. Only collegiate co-record holders Ryan Crouser of Texas (2016) and Ryan Whiting of Arizona (2008) have ever throw the indoor shot put farther. They have a 3 1/2 inch margin over Otterdahl with their mark of 71-3 1/2 (21.73 meters).

Alex Talley won the weight throw with his personal-best toss of 67-11 1/2 (20.71 meters). Alex Bartholomay won the 3,000 meters with his time of 8 minutes, 24.13 seconds, ranking 10th in NDSU history.

On the women's side, the Bison swept the top four places in the shot put and weight throw. Bailey Retzlaff won the shot put with her throw of 53-11 (16.43 meters). Maddy Nilles captured the weight throw title with her mark of 67-3 1/2 (20.51 meters).

NDSU took second place with a team score of 134.
