As concern for the wellbeing of pollinators such as bumblebees and butterflies continues to rise, the city of Willmar and the Kandiyohi County Soil and Water Conservation District are creating eight new pollinator habitats. Seven city parks will now include native wildflower and grass plantings, which will provide food and habitat for birds and pollinators along with a beautiful place for humans to enjoy.
The severe weather that had been expected to hit west central Minnesota over the holiday weekend did materialize. There were reports of a tornado near Appleton and Milan late afternoon Monday, as well as high winds, hail and rain throughout the area. Power outages, trees down and damage to structures were reported.
Algene Vossen, arrested after DNA evidence linked him to a 1974 killing in Willmar, has been found by a Kandiyohi County District Court judge to be incompetent to stand trial. The Minnesota Court of Appeals has affirmed that ruling.

State and federal lawmakers, as well as the state's agriculture commissioner and director of the state Board of Animal Health, came to Kandiyohi County on Tuesday to speak to area poultry producers and industry officials about how the avian flu has impacted them. Discussion was also had on how the state has been responding to the latest outbreak.
Two more commercial turkey flocks — in Blue Earth and Meeker counties — were added to the growing list of confirmed avian flu sites in Minnesota as of Friday's noon update, bringing the statewide total to 40 sites and 1,939,067 birds affected.
