FARGO - In his first time competing in the Fargo Cyclothon, Ivan Schleppenbach made sure it was a memorable race.
The St. Joseph, Minn. native won the event in a time of one hour, six minutes and 32 seconds.
This was the closet finish in the event's four year history. Six cyclists were within 20 feet of each other down the main stretch, but Schleppenbach pulled away.
"I didn't really think it was going to come down to the end I was stuck in the lead pack and I kept sticking with them as much as I could," Schleppenbach told WDAY Sports. "I came around the corner in third or fouth place or so and I knew I had to go as hard as I could. I looked back and saw a guy close on my left side and kept the leg pumping. Told my legs to shut up and keep going."
