FARGO – Moorhead boys hockey coach Jon Ammerman referred to Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to No. 8-ranked Prior Lake at the St. Louis Park Invitational in Minneapolis as a “melee.”
There were 80 minutes of penalties dished out and seven ejections for fighting, three of which will result in Moorhead losing players for Saturday’s game against Bloomington Jefferson.
Moorhead’s Will Borgen, Alex Mehnert and Codee Brace will be out for Saturday’s game, after being ejected midway through the third period Wednesday for fighting. According to Minnesota State High School League rules, any game misconducts will result in a player missing the following the game.
Another “melee,” as Ammerman called it, broke out with seconds remaining in the game in which four more players, two from each team, were asked to get off the ice. Those players were not ejected, so they will not have to sit out their next games.
“It was just a game that was filled with penalties,” Ammerman said. “Three got ejected for us, four got ejected for them. There was a little melee toward the end and there was two seconds left, so they just had to get off the ice. It was just a melee.”
Ammerman didn’t want to comment further on the situation, saying Moorhead’s focus is on the game Saturday against Bloomington Jefferson.
