FARGO-The 2-0 deficit Fargo Shanley faced Thursday has been an infrequent occurrence.
"There was a little nervousness,'' Deacons senior hitter Katie Roberts said. "We've only been in that situation a few times. But I knew we could come back.''
Shanley did rally, beating Jamestown 18-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-23, 15-4 in the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class A high school volleyball tournament at the Fargodome.
"It's not fun being down 2-0,'' Deacons coach Curt Johnson said. "But we could see the girls were confident they could come back.''
The 6-foot Roberts led the way with a match-high 20 kills. Height was a factor, with 6-foot Caira Berg adding 19 kills and 6-2 Emily Dietz 17. The trio combined for 56 of the Deacons' 68 kills. Shanley also had a 22-4 advantage in blocks, with Dietz leading the way with seven.
Julia Vetter had 53 assists for the Deacons.
"Height is important,'' said Johnson, whose team improved to 27-9. "We adjusted on defense in the last three sets to get better blocking and take some pressure off our defense. We set our blocking up better and I think it slowed Jamestown down. I thought Katie kept us going with some big swings.''
Jamestown used a 10-1 run to go up 16-9 in the first set en route to the win. The Blue Jays were down 23-20 in the second, but closed on a 6-1 spurt to win.
Shanley never trailed in the third. The pivotal point may have been in the fourth set. Jamestown was ahead 22-19, but two blocks by 6-1 Kylie Kanwischer highlighted a 6-1 Shanley run to close the set. Shanley then closed the match on a 13-2 run in dominating the fifth set.
"It's disappointing,'' Jamestown coach Sara Hegerle said. "It (the turnaround) happened so fast. The kids came out strong right away. But we don't see height like that.''
Makenzie Clark had 18 kills to lead Jamestown, with Courtney Peterson adding 16 and McKayla Kurtz 12. Megan Gaffaney had 50 assists for Jamestown, which dropped to 26-14.
J (kills-blocks-service aces): Kurtz 14-0-0, Nihill 0-0-1, Clark 18-0-0, Gaffaney 3-1-2 (50 assists), Peterson 16-3-0, Bruns 2-0-4, Ukestad 1-0-2, Schiele 0-0-0 (21 digs).
