FARGO-Bismarck head volleyball coach Shari Hewson saw faces that were scared of mistakes when she called timeouts as momentum was slipping away in the fourth set of the state quarterfinals. Hewson told her players to take their chances, otherwise Fargo Davies would end Bismarck's state championship hopes.
The West Region's No. 4-seeded Bismarck took its chances and came back from a 15-7 deficit in the fourth set to close out the East Region's top-seeded Davies 26-24, 28-26, 18-25, 25-21 in the North Dakota Class A state tournament quarterfinals on Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Fargodome.
"The fourth set, I'm so proud of them because they came back and it's a huge upset for them," Hewson said. "I think they had it and we came back and took momentum which is so hard to do in the game of volleyball."
Neither team went on long runs in the first two sets, but Bismarck (26-15) did just enough to win both. Looking like the team that won the East Region, Davies (21-13) took the third set convincingly and jumped out to an early lead in the fourth. Bismarck, behind a strong offense, closed on an 18-6 run to take the match and advance.
"I think Bismarck showed up to play. They wanted it more than we did," Davies head coach Missy Wilson said. "Defensively, they were solid, we knew that. Our defensive end of things just wasn't there. They were attacking areas that we showed some weakness in and kept doing it."
Kylee Bergantine led the Eagles with 13 kills and six blocks while Kenzee Langlie totaled a team-best 45 assists and McKenna Mikkelsen led the team with 20 digs.
Bismarck's Cara Haussler chalked up a match-high 18 kills and recorded 16 digs. Jessie Oja facilitated the Demons' offense with 46 assists, and Courtney Hawkinson totaled a match-high 23 digs.
