FARGO-Close was good for Bismarck Legacy. Not so much for Grand Forks Red River.

Legacy edged Red River 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class A high school volleyball tournament in the Fargodome Thursday. All four sets were close, with Legacy winning 21-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-23. The largest lead by either team in the match was six points.

"It's always disappointing when you don't win,'' Red River coach Carolyn Olson said. "But it was a good match. We played well. Legacy played well. That's all you can ask.''

Red River had to play catch-up most of the match.

The Roughriders took their first lead at 18-17 in the first set, closing on a 9-4 run for the win.

Red River rallied from a 19-15 deficit in the second set to a 20-19 lead, but never regained the lead after three straight Sabers points. Likewise, in the third, Red River trailed by as much as 16-10, rallied to a 20-19 lead but never regained the advantage after three straight Legacy points.

"We knew it would be like this, battling for every point,'' Legacy coach Jenn Astle said.

"Matches have been hard for us all year when we get a lead. Sometimes I think we get too comfortable with it. Today we found a way to finish.''

The final set was different from the first three, as it was close from beginning to end. There were 11 ties before Legacy used a 5-1 run to go ahead to stay at 21-19, finishing off the match with a Mercedes Baumgartner kill.

Red River junior Maggie Steffen had a big match with 24 kills.

"She had a good night,'' Olson said. "She did a nice job of hitting down the line and taking advantage of what open spots they were giving us.''

Legacy had a more little more balance, with Whitney Thomas getting 16 kills to go along with her match-high four service aces and Brita Feland had 10 kills.

"I don't know what the difference was,'' Astle said. "Maybe we just had a little more luck.''
