MOORHEAD-Minnesota State Moorhead junior wide receiver Damon Gibson is one of 42 nominees for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is awarded to the top player in NCAA Division II football.

Gibson ranked first in Division II in receiving yards (1,549) and receiving yards per game (140.8). He was third in receptions per game (8.2) and fourth in receiving touchdowns (17).

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Gibson set single-season school records for receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and tied the single-season mark with 90 receptions. Gibson, from Beardsley, Minn., also tied a single-game record with 237 receiving yards per game in the final game of the season against Northern State.

The 42 candidates include 20 quarterbacks, eight running backs, five receivers, three defensive linemen, two linebackers, one offensive lineman, one defensive back, one tight end and one kicker. The winner is scheduled to be announced on Dec. 16 via webcast.

Former North Dakota State quarterback Jeff Bentrim won the first Harlon Hill Trophy in 1986.
