GRAND FORKS-The winter storm that hit eastern North Dakota on Wednesday hasn't put a damper on postseason state tournaments scheduled in Grand Forks this week.
As of Wednesday afternoon, plans for the North Dakota high school boys tennis and boys soccer tournaments will begin Thursday as scheduled. Both three-day events run through Saturday, the tennis at Choice Health & Fitness and the soccer at Cushman Field.
Cushman will need to have snow removed from the field and the stands.
"At the beginning of the week, we already figured there wouldn't be any outdoor tennis,'' said Mark Rerick, the manager of the tournaments. "With soccer, the biggest thing is getting everybody here. I know that some of the western teams are planning to come (Wednesday). Typically, the tennis teams come the day before the tournament. So the biggest question is probably how long it will take them to crawl into town.''
Tom Mix, the media specialist at the North Dakota High School Activities Association, said it hasn't been unusual for state tennis tournaments to be played in their entirety-team, singles and doubles divisions-at indoor facilities.
"The schedule for things might have to be manipulated a little to get everything in,'' Mix said. "You always hope for great weather for tournaments. Sometimes it doesn't work out and we have to adjust. The great venues we have for these events help immensely.''
One change that has been made is Grand Forks Red River's football game Thursday at West Fargo Sheyenne. Due to poor field conditions, the 7 p.m. game has been switched to the artificial-surfaced field at Fargo Shanley High School.
