MOORHEAD --Abbie Ishaug knew that she could set a whole new standard for the Moorhead Spuds skiing team with one result at the Section 8 meet.
"If I could finish first, then I could just keep getting better the more I age," Ishaug said.
So the freshman did just that last Tuesday. She skied across the finish line with a total pursuit time of 31:30 to grab Moorhead's first individual section champion.
"I still couldn't believe I got first the more the week went on," she recalled.
Now she aims for the last challenge left in the season: a Minnesota state championship.
The Spuds girls team, which also won it's first section title last Tuesday, will head to Giants Ridge in Biwabik, MN for Friday's season finale.
Ishaug has already made as much history in one year as any other skier in program history.
That leaves a lot of pressure on a high school student in their first year, but Ishaug is embracing it.
"it would just be really exciting for people to see me and think, 'Oh, she got first,'" Ishaug said.
Her teammates have already recognized her talent, and believe the sky is the limit.
"She's going to be one of the top skiers in the state, easily," said junior Olivia Watson. "With three years left? Absolutely."
