Back-to-back Burros: Hillsboro-Central Valley hits overtime buzzer-beater to win Class B boys state championship

BISMARCK - Sixty-three points was enough to earn Hillsboro-Central Valley a state championship last year. It simply delayed the inevitable this year.

Ryan Troftgruben's 3-pointer with three seconds to play in overtime gave the Burros a 73-71 win over Minot Ryan on Saturday in the championship game of the North Dakota Class B state boys basketball tournament at the Bismarck Event Center.

Troftgruben took a feed in the corner and knocked down his third 3-pointer of the game to give the Burros their second straight state title. He finished with 11 points.

"Every time I shoot it, I feel good. You've got to have that as a shooter," Troftgruben said. "I felt just like money."

Tournament MVP Carson Henningsgard led the Burros with 22 points. Jack Camrud had a double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds. It was his third double-double of the tourney. Cade Baesler and Tyler Bergstrom each added 11 points.

Ryan got off the deck in the fourth quarter and outscored the defending state champs 17-5 down the stretch to force overtime.

"It was a special championship game," Ryan head coach Jeremy Feller said. "The kids didn't give up. Kudos to our kids."

Mason Hedberg's 3-pointer with nine seconds to go in regulation sent the game into overtime tied at 63-63. His two free throws with seconds remaining in overtime would have been the game-winners for Ryan had Troftgruben not connected.

Hedberg finished with 21 points to lead the Lions, while Ben Bohl added 24 and Anthony Vetter 16.

Troftgruben said the Burros were composed heading into overtime.

"It was a totally new game at that point. It wasn't like we were down by any means, we just had to play it like any game," Troftgruben said.

The Burros became the first Class B team since May-Port-CG in 2002 and 2003 - and just the 11th all time - to win two straight state championships. The Burros accomplished the feat once before, in 1973 and 1974.

Ryan (25-3) struggled from the field as the game got underway. It hit just two of its first nine shots while the Burros got six quick points from Baesler to take a 13-5 lead. The Lions got within 13-10, but still trailed 15-10 after the first quarter.

Hillsboro-CV led 23-21 after Bohl banked in a 3-pointer with 3:05 left in the half. But Henningsgard had a 3-pointer and free throw down the stretch and Baesler added a jumper to give the Burros a 29-23 lead at half.

Hillsboro-CV closed the season with 19 straight wins after a 71-67 loss to Four Winds-Minnewaukan. Ryan had its 15-game winning streak snapped. The Lions, who won three other titles at St. Leo's, were bidding for their second title as Bishop Ryan, the first coming in 1994.

The state title was the sixth for the Hillsboro program, leaving it two behind the eight won by Mayville, including those with as co-ops with Portland, Clifford and Galesburg.

Kyler McGillis poured in a game-high 27 points as St. John scored a 56-52 victory against Carrington to win third place.

Adam Jollie added 12 points and five rebounds for the Woodchucks.

Jayden Shipman led Carrington with 12 points and nine rebounds. Trey Rosenau added 11 points.

Derek Ferebee scored 14 points and added four assists to help lift Beulah to a 50-47 victory against Bismarck Shiloh Christian for fifth place.

Logan Miller added 13 points for the Miners, while Michael Schmidt chipped in eight points and 11 rebounds.

Jaden Mitzel paced Shiloh Christian with 15 points.

Luke Foertsch scored 27 points to lead Wyndmere-Lidgerwood to a 65-59 overtime victory against Stanley for seventh place.

Wyatt Harles added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Warbirds.

Wyatt Hanson paced Stanley with 27 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and two steals.
