Fargo North graduate Rau named new RedHawks general manager
FARGO—The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks turned to a familiar face to be their new general manager. The American Association baseball club named Matt Rau to be the team's new GM on Monday.
The Fargo North High School graduate played baseball at North Dakota State and is also a former member of the grounds crew at Newman Outdoor Field.
"For me, it was an organization that was run well from the top to the bottom," Rau said. "Getting back into baseball and coming home were the biggest draws."
Rau takes over for Josh Buchholz, who was recently named executive director of the American Association. Buchholz spent 22 years in RedHawks organization and had been the team's general manager since 2005.
"We've kept in touch over the years," Rau said of Buchholz. "Big shoes to fill with him, but I'm grateful for the opportunity."
Rau most recently worked as the general manager of St. Cloud State Sports Properties for Learfield, primarily handling advertising and marketing sales for the SCSU athletic department. He also had previous experience working with minor league baseball teams and a United States Hockey League team.
"Matt brings a wealth of knowledge from the various positions he has held in the sports industry and will help the RedHawks grow even more," said Brad Thom, the team's president and CEO. "Matt has some pretty big shoes to fill, and I am confident he will do a fantastic job."
Rau said his familiarity with Fargo-Moorhead should help him transition into his new role.
"For me it's a lot of knowing what works in Fargo and mixing some stuff I've seen at the various spots," Rau said. "It's a well-run organization so I don't have to reinvent the wheel."
