FARGO — Jake Malec belted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift North Dakota State to a 5-3 win over Valley City State on Tuesday at Newman Outdoor Field.
The two-run homer was Malec's seventh this season. He paced the Bison with three hits, adding two runs and two RBIs. Charley Hesse and Jack Simonsen each tallied two hits, and Peter Brookshaw had a hit and a run scored.
NDSU starting pitcher Hunter Koep had a no-decision, tossing two innings, and allowing one unearned run on one hit with a walk and one strikeout. Zach Smith struck out three over two innings and Parker Harm fanned three in 1 1/3 innings. Wyatt Nelson (1-1) notched the win, pitching two shutout innings and giving up one hit with one strikeout.
Valley City State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on an error. The Bison responded with two runs in the home half of the first. Malec scored as Bennett Hostetler reached on a dropped fly ball to even it at 1-1. Tucker Rohde brought Brookshaw home on a sacrifice fly to give NDSU the lead.
Simonsen extended it to 3-1 with a solo shot in the fourth inning, his fifth of the year.
Gedeon Ellis and David Demeter each had two hits and an RBI for the Vikings (17-24).
NDSU is scheduled to next play Kansas on the road in a three-game series starting at 6 p.m. Friday.
