FARGO — David Washington's solo home run in the 11th inning and solid relief work by Zach Hartman lifted the Milwaukee Milkmen to a 5-4 win over Fargo-Moorhead on Tuesday at Newman Outdoor Field.
Washington socked a 2-1 pitch from RedHawks reliever Austin Ver Steeg over the wall leading off the inning. Hartman set the RedHawks down in order in the bottom of the 11th. He retired all six batters he faced and struck out three to get the win.
As they did in Monday's weather-shortened loss, the RedHawks got down early, surrendering three runs in the top of the first.
The RedHawks got a run back in the fourth on Leo Pina's solo home run and, after Milwaukee took a 4-1 lead in the sixth, picked up a second run in the home half on Dylan Kelly's RBI single.
In the ninth, Kelly singled and Nick Shumpert pinch ran, and Kevin Krause singled and Will Zimmerman ran for him. Shumpert and Zimmerman moved up on Alex Boxwell's sacrifice and they both scored on Sam Dexter's RBI single.
Dexter was 2-for-4 with the two RBI and Kelly was 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Ver Steeg allowed one run on three hits and struck out three in three innings.
The RedHawks and Milkmen play the third game of a four-game set at 7:02 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Newman.
