FERGUS FALLS — Moorhead pitcher Gavin Gast didn't need much help against Bemidji on Friday but his Blues teammates, especially Jacob Hendrickson, gave him plenty just the same.

Gast worked a complete game, allowing only an unearned run on five hits and Hendrickson homered twice and drove in four runs as the Blues defeated Bemidji 8-1 to move into Saturday's Legion Sub-State 14 Tournament championship game.

Gast didn't issue a walk and struck out three. Hendrickson was 3-for-4, and David Lindell, Carson Zimmel, Ryan Luthi and Wyatt Tweet had the Blues' other hits.

The No. 2 seed Blues are undefeated in the tournament and an opponent would have to beat the Blues twice to claim the sub-state crown. No. 1 seed Bemidji plays No. 5 Detroit Lakes in an elimination game at noon Saturday, with the winner playing the Blues at 2:30 p.m. A second championship game, if needed, is set for noon Sunday. All games are in Fergus Falls.

On Friday, the Blues' Hendrickson hit a solo homer in the first, Bemidji answered in the bottom half, and the teams were knotted 1-1 until the fifth. The Blues scored twice on Hendrickson's RBI single and Hayden Netland's bases-loaded walk.

Moorhead blew it open with a five-run seventh. Hendrickson hit a two-run homer, then the Blues loaded the bases when Luthi and Netland walked ahead of a Zimmel single. A Bemidji error allowed two more runs to score and a fifth came in on Zach Taft's sacrifice fly.
