Bibeau commits to Bison football

Most White Bear Lake High opponents knew Shawn Bibeau as a running back who averaged nearly 10 yards a carry. North Dakota State fans may get to know him as a kicker.

Bibeau gave the Bison football program a verbal commitment after visiting the school over the weekend. He'll be competing with junior Kyle Wilcox for the starting nod at kicker next fall.

Bibeau was a Minnesota Associated Press first-team all-state selection. He booted 31 of the Bears' 45 kickoffs into the end zone. Two of his onside kicks were recovered by White Bear Lake teammates.

He was a perfect 28 of 28 on extra points and hit 4 of 6 field goals, with a long of 46 yards.

He was also a starting running back who averaged 9.4 yards per carry his senior year.

"He was on the field for each drive that we scored, then kicked the extra point and then kicked off," said White Bear Lake coach Bob Jackson. "It's not like he was ever resting."

Bibeau got a serious look from the University of Connecticut, considered South Dakota State and "a bunch of D-III's," he said. He said he was also looked at as a receiver.

NDSU is looking for a replacement for four-year starter Cory Vartanian.

Bibeau said the allure of I-AA football and the Fargodome were major factors in his decision.

"It's beautiful," Bibeau said of the dome. "It's better than the Metrodome we have down here."

National signing day is Feb. 1.
