Bison decathletes 14th, 17th in nation

STANFORD, Calif. -- North Dakota State junior Nathan Schmidt finished 14th and assistant coach Stevie Keller 17th at the U.S. decathlon championship Sunday.

STANFORD, Calif. -- North Dakota State junior Nathan Schmidt finished 14th and assistant coach Stevie Keller 17th at the U.S. decathlon championship Sunday.

Tom Pappas established himself as the No. 2 decathlete in U.S. history, topping his personal best by 200 points with 8,784 to win his second consecutive championship.

He passed Bruce Jenner, Steve Fritz, Chris Huffins and Dave Johnson on the U.S. all-time list. Among Americans, only Dan O'Brien ever scored more.

Schmidt finished with 7,106 points and Keller 6,627.

Keller took first in his heats of the 110-meter hurdles and discus, but failed to make height in the pole vault, earning no points. He also took third in the 1,500 run.
