FARGO — North Dakota State is expected to see its first departure since the close of spring football practice last Saturday. Freshman tight end Kelby Azure from Northwood High School (N.D.) will enter the NCAA transfer portal.

The 6-foot-4, 233-pound Azure will be looking for a school that will afford him a better shot at seeing the field, according to a source close to the program. Azure, a 2022 graduate from Northwood, redshirted last year.

The Bison have eight tight ends on their roster and another two incoming freshmen tight end recruits who also play fullback. Four of the tight ends also redshirted last season.

The spring transfer portal window opened April 15 and closes Sunday.

Azure was one of seven players from North Dakota who were part of the December 2021 signing day class of 31 players. The other six are still with the program.
