FARGO — Charley Hesse led a big North Dakota State offensive charge and the Bison defeated Northern Colorado 13-6 on Sunday to complete a Summit League series sweep at Newman Outdoor Field.

Hesse had three hits, including a home run and a double, and he drove in three runs.

The Bison led 6-0 after five innings but an NDSU error in the sixth led to four unearned Bears runs.

Northern Colorado threatened to pull closer in the seventh when Craig Kenny walked and tried to score from first on Lincoln Turner's double to right. But Bison right fielder Jack Simonsen threw to second baseman Druw Sackett, whose relay to catcher Will Busch cut down Kenny at the plate for the third out.

Charged up, the Bison responded with five runs in the home half of the seventh. Logan Williams doubled in a run, Hesse hit a two-run homer, Will Busch doubled in a run and later scored on Jack Simonsen's ground out.

Evan Sankey started and went six innings, allowing the four unearned runs on nine hits and striking out six.

Calen Schwabe had three hits and drove in a run and Williams had two hits and two RBIs. Peter Brookshaw also had two hits.

The Bison are 15-4 and remain atop the Summit League standings with three home league games left. They are 28-16 overall and play host to Western Illinois May 19-21.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
