FARGO — South Dakota State overcame a four-run deficit with five runs in the sixth inning and held off North Dakota State 6-5 in the opening game of a three-game Summit League series on Thursday at Newman Outdoor Field.

The Bison built a 4-0 lead through five innings on Jack Steil's run-scoring triple in the second, RBI singles from James Dunlap and Kyle Law in the third inning, and Druw Sackett's solo home run in the fifth.

But the Jackrabbits produced a two-run single, a pair of RBI singles and an RBI double in the sixth inning. They added a run in the seventh.

Law doubled in a run in the seventh to cut the lead to a run but SDSU reliever Ryan Bourassa struck out three of the four batters he faced to earn his eighth save of the season.

The Bison and Jackrabbits square off in the second game of the series at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 19.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
