College softball: SDSU shuts out Bison twice

NDSU's Paige Vargas struck out 10 batters in Game 2

BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State held North Dakota State to only two hits on Friday, defeating the Bison 3-0 and 1-0 in a Summit League softball doubleheader.

In Game 1, NDSU's Sam Koehn got the team's lone hit, breaking up SDSU pitcher Grace Glanzer's no-hitter in the seventh inning. Glanzer walked two and struck out four.

Bison pitcher Lainey Lyle (6-6) went the distance. She struck out five and walked four, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits.

Paige Vargas (9-9) had a solid showing on the mound for NDSU (16-26, 11-10 Summit) in Game 2. She surrendered a run on three hits with five walks and 10 strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Jackrabbits (36-5, 19-1) pitcher Tori Kniesche (19-1) tossed a gem in the second game. Kniesche gave up one hit and one walk, and struck out 11 in a complete-game shutout for her 15th consecutive win. Emilee Buringa had an infield single for NDSU's lone hit.

The Bison and Jackrabbits are slated to play another doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
