FARGO — North Dakota State long snapper Mike Florentine and backup punter Cody Lindquist are in the NCAA transfer portal.

Florentine played in all 15 games for the Bison as a true freshman. He was a 2021 recruit out of Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort, Ill.

Florentine did a fine job of replacing veteran long snapper Ross Kennelly this season. There were no obvious problems with snaps on punts, field goals and extra points.

It's a position in which NDSU takes pride, as the Bison strongly emphasize special teams play as an advantage over opponents. NDSU has an FCS history of outstanding long snappers with Jeff Curtis, Michael Murphy, James Fisher and Kennelly.

Lindquist, a junior, transferred from Iowa Western Community College prior to the 2021 season, but lost the punter job to freshman Kaedin Steindorf.

Florentine and Lindquist make it four NDSU players to enter the portal since it defeated Montana State in the FCS national championship game on Jan. 8.

Defensive end Bartholomew Ogbu and receiver Adrian Adams are in the portal . Both were reserves.

Players enter the portal with the intent of transferring to another school. The NCAA allows athletes to transfer one time during their eligible years without penalty.

It's likely NDSU will add some transfers like it did a year ago to fill holes in their lineup or add depth at specific positions. So far, tight end Jacob Streit from NCAA Division II Northern State is only known transfer added by the Bison.

More from Mike McFeely:
It should've been a slam-dunk this was going to make the ballot, given the power players in charge of getting it done. No way this crew could screw it up, not like the flakes who sought an initiated measure to impose term limits and were rejected in March for having thousands of ineligible signatures on their petitions.
