College softball: Bison down Tommies to complete Summit sweep

NDSU broke a tie in the fifth inning and added three more runs in the seventh to put away a win over St. Thomas on Monday in St. Paul.

ST. PAUL — The North Dakota State softball team's Bella Dean drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth and added insurance with a three-run home run in the seventh as the Bison defeated St. Thomas 6-2 on Monday to complete a three-game Summit League sweep of the Tommies.

Anjolee Aguilar-Beaucage put the Bison up 2-0 in the top of the third with a two-run home run but the Tommies answered with two of their own in the home half of the inning.

In the fifth, NDSU's Carley Goetschius led off with a double, tagged and reached third on Aguilar-Beaucage's fly out, then scored on Dean's single to center field.

In the seventh, Emilee Buringa led off with a single and Aguilar-Beaucage drew a one-out walk. Dean hollowed with a three-run shot to put the Bison up 6-2. In the bottom of the inning, reliever Lainey Lyle allowed a one-out single but got a ground out and a line out to end the game.

Paige Vargas started and allowed two runs on five hits, striking out five, in 2-2/3 innings. Lyle went the final 4-1/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits, three walks and she struck out two.


The Bison are 10-5 in the Summit and 26-16 overall. The travel to Grand Forks for a three-game set against North Dakota on April 29-30.
