FARGO — Because of weather issues and scheduling, the North Dakota softball team had played five more games at North Dakota State's Tharaldson Park than the Bison this season entering Saturday's doubleheader between the two Summit League rivals.

On Saturday, the Bison made it clear they still owned the home field advantage.

In NDSU's first home game of the season, Bella Dean hit a three-run home run and Emilee Buringa twice doubled in runs to lead the Bison to an 8-5 victory.

In game two, Dean had two hits and two RBI and Lainey Lyle pitched seven strong innings as NDSU completed the sweep with a 4-2 win.

In the first game, UND scored twice in the top of the first inning but the Bison countered with Dean's three-run homer in the home half of the inning. They added three more runs in the second on RBI singles from Skylar Padgett and Carley Goetschius and Buringa's RBI double.

The Hawks scored two runs in the sixth inning to shave NDSU's lead to three runs, but Bison pitcher Paige Vargas got a strikeout with two Hawks on base in the seventh to end it.

UND's Cassie Castaneda had two hits, including a solo homer in the sixth and Mariah Peters doubled in the Hawks' first two runs.

In game two, Dean gave the Bison a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first. The Hawks tied it on Castaneda's run-scoring double in the third.

Woldruff doubled in the go-ahead run in the fifth and the Bison added two runs in the sixth on Dean's RBI fielder's choice and a bases-loaded wild pitch.

Lyle went all seven innings for her 12th win over the season. She allowed two runs on six hits, walked three and struck out two. UND's Jackie Albrecht took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings. She walked two and struck out five.

The Bison, 28-16 overall, improved to 12-5 in the Summit League standings and sit in third, one-half game behind 12-4 Omaha. South Dakota State leads the Summit at 13-0. The Hawks fell to 5-10 in the league and 8-37 overall.

The teams wrap up their weekend series with a single game at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 30, at Tharaldson Park. The Bison close out the regular season with three home games against Omaha on May 5-6.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
