RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The North Dakota State softball team defeated Cal State Northridge 2-1 and topped California Baptist 9-4 on Friday to open play at the Amy S. Harrison Classic.
Dez Cardenas and Cameryn Maykut each had a hit and drove in a run for the Bison against Cal State Northridge.
NDSU starter Paige Vargas (6-1) struck out nine and walked two, giving up one run on four hits in a complete-game effort.
Against California Baptist, the Bison pulled away in the top of the third inning to break a 3-3 tie.
Carley Goetschius started the rally with an RBI double to put NDSU ahead 4-3. Reanna Rudd then hit a two-run single and Emilee Buringa put the exclamation point on the surge with a three-run home run.

Buringa finished with two hits and five RBIs to pace the Bison. Rudd totaled two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Goetschius had two hits and an RBI and Cardenas drove in one run.
Lainey Lyle (1-0) picked up the win for NDSU. She pitched four innings of relief, giving up one run on one hit with four strikeouts.
NDSU continues play in Riverside with a Saturday doubleheader against UC Riverside. Game 1 is set to start at 1 p.m.
