College softball: Errors doom Bison in loss to rival North Dakota

The Fighting Hawks scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning and escaped Fargo with a win Sunday in the third game of a three game Summit League series against the Bison.

FARGO — The North Dakota State softball team committed two sixth-inning errors that led to three North Dakota runs and the Fighting Hawks claimed the final game of a three-game set against the Bison 4-3 on Sunday at Tharalson Park.

The teams were tied 1-1 through five innings. UND's Mariah Peters led off the sixth with a single and cruised to third on an NDSU two-base error. The Bison got the next two hitters out but the Hawks' Taya Hopfauf singled in Peters with the go-ahead run.

UND's Angie Dumlao reached on an infield single and Maddi Moore reached on another Bison error to load the bases. Katie Joten followed with a two-run double down the left field line and the Hawks led 4-1.

The Bison countered with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Chloe Woldruff singled with two outs and Emilee Buringa doubled to right. Carley Goetschius followed with a two-run single to make it 4-3.

UND Isabella Has singled with two outs in the top of the seventh but NDSU standed her. In the home half, Zoe King led off with a walk but UND reliever Camryn Lasota got fly out, a force at second and another fly out to end the game and get the save.

Joten had a hit and the two RBI and Hopfauf was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Madison Peterson singled in UND's first run in the third inning.

NDSU's Buringa was 2 for 3 and drove in the game's first run in the second inning, Goetschius had a hit and two RBI

UND starter Jack Albrecht got the win, allowing three runs on six hits in 5-2/3 innings. She walked three and struck out five.

NDSU's Paige Vargas took the loss. She gave up one earned run on eight hits in 5-2/3 innings. She walked one and struck out six.

NDSU fell to 12-6 in the Summit League and is third behind South Dakota State (14-0) and Omaha (13-4). The Bison are 28-17 overall and close the regular season against Omaha on Friday, May 5-6 at Tharaldson Park.

UND is 6-10 in the league and 9-37 overall. The Hawks play host to Western Illinois on May 5-6 to close out the regular season.
