Hot start lifts Western Illinois over Bison women in Summit opener

Reneya Hopkins scored a career-high 15 points for NDSU

MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois dropped 29 points in the first quarter to fuel a 77-65 victory over North Dakota State on Saturday in the Summit League women's basketball opener for each team.

Reneya Hopkins paced the Bison (5-2, 0-1 Summit) with a career-high 15 points. Abby Schulte also tallied double-digit points for NDSU, finishing with 11. Ryan Cobbins added eight points.

Evan Zars scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Leathernecks (2-7, 1-0). Western Illinois closed the opening quarter on a 12-6 run, and started the second frame with an 11-2 spurt to help build a 46-30 halftime lead.

The two teams are scheduled to play again at 1 p.m. Saturday in Macomb to conclude the two-game series.
