Bison third after Day 1 of nationals

BOSTON -- The North Dakota State women's track and field team sits in third place in the team standings, and the Bison men eighth, after Day 1 of the NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.

BOSTON -- The North Dakota State women's track and field team sits in third place in the team standings, and the Bison men eighth, after Day 1 of the NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.

Marc Steckler and Nate Schmidt earned All-American honors. Steckler tied for second in the pole vault (16 feet, 4¾ inches) and Schmidt placed seventh in the long jump (23-6).

The NDSU women scored all eight of their points in the long jump. Amanda Thieschafer earned All-American honors and six team points with a third-place jump (19-1½) and Amy Uthus also earned All-American honors and two team points with a seventh-place jump (18-7).

Marques Johnson (60 meters), Jared Essler (400) and Darik Hoff (mile) advanced to today's finals for the men.

Shanda Larsen (400), Nicole Rieck (400), Kinsey Coles (800) and Sarah Klein (800) qualified for today's finals for the Bison women. The final day of competition resumes today.
