MOORHEAD-- Moorhead pitcher Tyler Oberg came on strong in the late innings as the Blues defeated Fargo Post 2 6-2 in American Legion baseball Tuesday at Matson Field.

Oberg retired the final eight batters he faced, striking out three of them. He was able to pitch his way out of jams all game, only allowing two runs to score on ten hits. He struck out six batters over nine innings.

"I was just trying to pump the zone and mix up pitches," said the pitcher who did not walk a batter. "I got in a nice little rhythm pretty much almost the whole game and the good defense behind me saved a lot of runs."

The defense was solid behind Oberg all game. The Blues did not commit an error. With a runner on second, second baseman Carter Howell ended the third inning with a sliding snag on a grounder deep in the hole. The defense came up big again to end the third inning with a 6-4-3 double play with runners on first and second with one out. Moorhead was holding onto a 2-1 lead.

Aggressive baserunning ignited the offense for the Blues. They stole two bases and advanced on five wild pitches or passed balls. Four Moorhead runs were scored after a baserunner either stole second or advanced on a passed ball. Jake Erholtz scored before Moorhead recorded a hit in the sixth inning. He walked and then stole second base. Two passed balls allowed him to take third and to score. Later in the inning Justin Keller scored a run by going from first to third on a single. Jayce Johnson hit a single to right field. The right fielder attempted to get Keller out at third, but the ball sailed over the third baseman's head and out of play.

"When our guys are on base, when the ball leaves the pitcher's hand, if they can see it's going in the dirt we want to be aggressive-especially early in the game-and take second base," Moorhead manager Bryant Bergeson said. "We were able to do that and we were able to get the guys in a couple times after we did that so that really benefitted us early in the game."

Fargo Post 2 scored the first run of the game to go up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. Carter Thompson hit a long fly ball off the upper half of the left field wall for a double. Ben Bryant scored. The Post 2 lead was short lived and they would not regain it. Moorhead tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first. They scored again to go ahead 2-1 in the second and did not trail again in the game.
