FARGO -- As advertised, the search for the next head football coach at North Dakota State may already be in its final stages.
University President Dean Bresciani, in his monthly meeting with the school’s department chairs on Wednesday, told the group the process is down to a small pool of candidates.
“Each is very familiar with NDSU,” he said.
That would seemingly make current defensive coordinator Matt Entz and offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham likely candidates. Two former Bison assistant coaches may also be in the mix: Tim Polasek, now the offensive line coach at the University of Iowa; and Brent Vigen, the offensive coordinator at Wyoming.
Head coach Chris Klieman accepted the same position at Kansas State this week but is coaching the team through the Division I FCS playoffs. NDSU hosts South Dakota State Friday night in the Division I FCS semifinals at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome.

Bresciani earlier this week told The Forum he wanted a head coach named sooner than later. The school president has the authority to waive the mandatory posting period for any campus hire, whether its internal or external, based on timely considerations.
National signing day is next Wednesday and the Bison have 25 verbal commitments.
Entz indicated on 1660-AM this week he’s interested in the position.
