FARGO – The defending North Dakota girls basketball state champions in Class A and Class B will play each other in December.
Fargo Shanley – winner of last year’s Class A state title – is scheduled to play defending Class B champions Minot Ryan on Dec. 27th at the University of Mary’s McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck.
“The whole reason I wanted to do this was because it is great for North Dakota girls basketball,” Jacobson said. “I think we need a little shot in the arm to create a little more interest. I think it is going to be great.”
Ryan spent all of last season ranked No. 1 in Class B and won its second-straight state championship last March. The Lions also have won 57 consecutive games – a streak that dates back to the 2012-13 season and is tied for the most consecutive wins by a girls program in state history.
The Lions are led by a pair of 6-foot-2 posts Hannah Stewart and Gabbie Bohl. Stewart averaged 23 points and 11.3 rebounds.
“(Hannah) Stewart is one of the best post players if not the best post player in the state right now and (Gabbie) Bohl isn’t too far behind,” Jacobson said. “We are an athletic team and that is going to help us out.”
Shanley was 23-2 last season. The Deacons are led by two-time all-state junior guard Sarah Jacobson, who led Class A averaging 21.7 points and 6.8 assists.
