The Concordia men's basketball team had no answer for the 1-2 punch of Tom Conboy and Abe Woldeslassie on Wednesday night.

The duo combined for 39 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists to lead Macalester to an 84-74 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball victory against the Cobbers before 278 fans at Memorial Auditorium.

"When they needed a basket, they scored," said Cobber junior forward Luke Linz, who finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds. "They had the inside-outside game. If we pressured the guards, they kicked it inside. If we doubled inside, they kicked it out. We couldn't stop it."

Woldeslassie began his dominance at the end of the first half.

The 5-foot-7 point guard from Richfield, Minn., picked off an inbounds pass and made a layup at the buzzer to give Macalester a 39-38 halftime lead.

Concordia opened the second half with a 10-2 run to go ahead 48-41. But Woldeslassie took over with the score tied 50-50.

Using a combination of speedy drives to the basket and jumpers, Woldeslassie scored seven consecutive points during a 15-0 Scots run.

Once Macalester had the lead, it relied on Conboy to pick apart Cobber defenders in the paint.

Conboy finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Woldeslassie had 18 points and nine assists.

"I really don't know what to say about what happened on defense," Linz said. "Their big guy Conboy had his way."

Concordia countered with Linz, who scored 14 in each half and made 13 of 18 shots.

The rest of Concordia's roster combined to go 17 of 40 from the floor, including 3 of 13 from beyond the arc.

The loss was another setback in the Cobbers' attempt to make the conference playoffs. Concordia is last in the league at 3-11 with six games remaining.

The top six make the postseason.

"We had trouble stopping (Woldeslassie)," Linz said. "And he is the key to their offense."
