College baseball: Cobbers open season with split

Concordia cranked out 18 hits in a season-opening win over Gwynedd Mercy but the Cobbers lost to Buena Vista on Sunday in Florida.

AUBURNDALE, Florida — Concordia got its 2023 season started in a big way, cranking out 18 hits and defeating Gwynedd Mercy 12-2 on Sunday in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

But the Cobbers later fell to Buena Vista 7-2.

Against GM, the Cobbers trailed 2-0 after two innings but scored six runs in the third and four more in the fourth before adding single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Max Boran was 3 for 3 with a double and two runs batted in. Jake Christianson, Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe and Andy Gravdahl all had two hits and two RBI. Thomas Horan, Wyatt Gunkel, Matt Gruber and Justin Kloster all had two hits and an RBI.

Cobber starter Ashwin Stratton went five innings to get the win. He allowed two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out seven. Henkemeyer-Howe allowed a hit and a walk in two scoreless innings in relief. He struck out one.

The Cobbers are 1-1 overall and continue play in the invitational on Tuesday, March 7, with a doubleheader against Husson at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
