Former NDSU quarterback Lance, Bison football dynasty featured in new documentary 'NDSQBU'

FARGO — A documentary on former North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance and the Bison football dynasty is set to premiere on TheAnalyst.com at 7 p.m. Friday, April 23, when Stats Perform tells the story of "NDSQBU: The Emergence of Trey Lance in an Unlikely College Football Dynasty."

Lance is expected to be a top-10 selection in the upcoming NFL Draft, which would make him the second Bison quarterback drafted in the top 10 since 2016 when the Philadelphia Eagles selected Carson Wentz at No. 2 overall. The 2021 NFL Draft is April 29-May 1 in Cleveland.

TheAnalyst.com is a sports website that uses data for storytelling and the hub for Stats Perform's FCS coverage. The NDSU documentary premiere is a free livestream.

"I think it's every kid's dream that's playing college football, especially at the Division I level, to play in the NFL one day," Lance said.

The documentary will also initially air on Bally Sports North (formerly Fox Sports North) at 3 p.m. Monday, April 26.

Lance followed quarterbacks like Easton Stick, Wentz and Brock Jensen as the Bison earned eight of nine FCS national titles from the 2011-2019 seasons.

“NDSQBU” is a production of TheAnalyst.com and Stats Perform and told through interviews with NDSU coaches, players, local Fargo media, the Lance family and Trey Lance, who is from Marshall, Minn.

Lance led the Bison to a 16-0 FCS national title as a freshman in 2019 before he declared for the NFL Draft after playing one game in the fall of 2020. In 2019, Lance completed 192 of 287 passes for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed for 1,100 yards and 14 TDs.

“Something that started as us wanting to tell a story about Trey’s freshman season inevitably converged with the origins of NDSU football’s success. Both threads are compelling underdog stories in their own right,” said The Analyst editor-in-chief Kevin Chroust, the short documentary’s director. “We went to Fargo, and the more we learned, the idea of this being a five- or 10-minute segment only about Trey went out the window rather quickly.”

Lance became the first freshman to win the Walter Payton Award, which is given to the top offensive player in FCS, and he also won the Jerry Rice Award for the top freshman in the FCS.

“Had we written a script for the season,” said Angie Lance, Trey’s mother, “we never would have dared write how it turned out.”
