Men's hockey: Cole O'Connell goal lifts Cobbers to overtime win

Gustavus rallied in the final minutes of the second period to force OT but the Cobbers' victory on Saturday earned them a split of an MIAC series.

MOORHEAD — Cole O'Connell scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner, in Concordia's 4-3 win over Gustavus on Saturday at the Cullen Hockey Center.

O'Connell's first goal at 3:17 of the second period on assists from Ben Luedtke and Cole Lehman put the Cobbers up 3-1. But the Gusties' Micah Gernander and Brandon Sloth scored goals late in the period to tie it.

After a scoreless third period, O'Connell netted the game-winning at 3:28 of overtime on assists from Liam Haslam and Hanson O'Leary.

Concordia's Caden Triggs scored the game's first goal at 2:28 of the first period on assists from Haslam and Jacen Bracko. Luedtke made it 2-0 at 3:56 on an assist from Kevin Ness, but Sloth made it 2-1 with about 90 seconds left in the first.

Concordia dominated the offensive zone, outshooting the Gusties 41-15, including 5-1 in OT. The Cobbers' Matt Fitzgerald stopped 12 shots and the Gusties' Jackson Hjelle made 37 saves.

The Cobbers salvaged a split of the weekend series after losing in a shootout on Friday. They are 7-6-1 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 10-11-2 overall. They wrap up the regular season with two games at St. Mary's on Feb. 17-18.
