HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Sam Houston quarterback Eric Schmid scored on a 6-yard touchdown run with less than four minutes remaining to lift the Bearkats to a 24-20 victory against North Dakota State on Sunday, May 2, in the Division I FCS quarterfinal at Bowers Stadium.

Second-seeded Sam Houston (8-0) advanced to the national quarterfinals, knocking off the three-time defending national champion Bison. NDSU (7-3) lost three games in a season for the first time since 2010, ending a string of nine consecutive seasons in the FCS semifinals.

“Unfortunately, we ran out of gas today," Bison head coach Matt Entz said. "We had opportunities.”

The Bison took a 20-17 lead after Jake Reinholz with 8 minutes, 17 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. Sam Houston, however, countered with a touchdown drive to earn the victory.
