Shelby Frank is no stranger to making history.

"We know what I was able to do and I know that I wasn't gonna settle for anything less than what I was capable of.

“The discus has always been my baby.”

Beginning in 8th grade, Frank won four consecutive state titles in the discus at Red River High School. Frank's success at the high school level landed her in the Big 10 at the University of Minnesota.

"I made it for a reason, and I can't waste this opportunity now."

As a freshman, Frank placed in 16th at the NCAA championships. But it was at this year's NCAA Championships where she had another historical meet.

"I was watching all the other girls throw, I was like, 'holy, what if I, what if I don't make it? What if I do?'"

In the discuss finals, Frank not only was battling the competition, but also the elements; sitting in 8th place going into her final throw.

“Despite the rain, despite a slippery ring, I kind of just I told myself it was last year, I'm gonna give it my all. On my last throw, I was just looking around Hayward field. On the last one, I pushed myself a little bit harder, because I was like, 'this is the last one like, I gotta go right now.'"

Frank’s throw of 54.87 meters propelled her into 6th, becoming the only Gopher to earn First Team All-American.

“It was a great feeling. My coaches were proud, my family was proud and I was super proud of fighting through everything.”

From winning titles at the high school level, to now launching herself onto the national stage. Frank will now compete at the USAs.

“It's going to be kind of like a dream moment, but I’m going to go out and have fun with it.”
