Women's tennis: Dragons cruise to win over Upper Iowa

MSU Moorhead won five of six singles matches and also earned the doubles point in an NSIC match Saturday at Courts Plus in Fargo.

FARGO — Minnesota State Moorhead won five of six singles matches and added the doubles point to down Upper Iowa 6-1 in the first of the Dragons' two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference weekend matches on Saturday at Courts Plus.

The Dragons' Shaelyn Johnson won a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Varvara Ogorodnikova at No. 1 singles, and teammate Tiannah Gu needed three sets but defeated Johanne Vallee 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 at No. 2 singles.

MSUM's Marissa Burian won 6-2, 6-2 over Elaina Wall at No. 4 singles and Claire Nemmers defeated Katie O'Brien 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. The Dragons picked up another point by forfeit at No. 6 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, MSUM's Tia Dykema teamed with Johnson for a 6-3 win over UIU's Vallee and Rafaela Tavares. Gu and Madison Bell won 6-2 over Ogorodnikova and Wall at No. 2 doubles and the Dragons won No. 3 doubles by forfeit.

The Dragons are 4-6 in the NSIC and 8-9 overall. They play host to Winona State at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 16, at Courts Plus to wrap up the regular season. The NSIC Tournament is April 21-23.
